Kourion (Curium) is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Cyprus, spectacularly situated atop a 100-metre limestone cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea near Limassol. Founded in the Neolithic period and flourishing as a major city-kingdom from the 12th century BC through the Roman era, Kourion today offers a remarkable window into the ancient world. The centrepiece is the beautifully restored Greco-Roman theatre, originally built in the 2nd century BC and expanded by the Romans to seat 3,500 spectators. The theatre's extraordinary setting — with the stage framed by the azure sea beyond — makes it one of the most dramatic performance venues in the Mediterranean, still hosting concerts and theatrical productions during summer festivals. The House of Eustolios features remarkably preserved floor mosaics depicting fish, birds, and the personification of Ktisis (Creation). The early Christian basilica, with its impressive colonnade, speaks to Kourion's importance in the early centuries of Christianity. The nearby Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, guardian of the surrounding forests, offers a peaceful walk among ancient columns and sacred grounds. The site was devastated by massive earthquakes in 365 AD but has been extensively excavated and restored since the 1930s.
