Vienna (Wien), Austria's elegant capital straddling the Danube, is one of Europe's great cultural cities — a place where imperial grandeur, artistic innovation, and refined coffeehouse culture converge. The city's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is dominated by St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom), whose Gothic spire has watched over the city since the 14th century, and the Hofburg Palace, the sprawling former seat of Habsburg power for over 600 years. Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs' summer residence with its 1,441 rooms and magnificent baroque gardens, rivals Versailles in splendour. Vienna's museum quarter is extraordinary — the Kunsthistorisches Museum houses one of the world's finest art collections, including works by Vermeer, Raphael, and an unmatched collection of Bruegel paintings. The Belvedere Palace displays Klimt's iconic 'The Kiss.' As the city of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Strauss, Vienna's musical heritage is unparalleled, with the Vienna State Opera and the Musikverein (home of the Vienna Philharmonic) offering performances of the highest calibre. The Viennese coffeehouse tradition, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, remains central to daily life — lingering over a Melange and Sachertorte at Café Central or Café Sperl is an essential experience.
