European trail networks are among the best marked in the world, but marking systems differ by country and confidence in a phone screen is not the same as knowing where you are. Most hiking incidents in accessible mountain areas come from route-finding errors and poor timing, not from technical difficulty.

Learn the local waymark convention before starting. Italy uses red and white paint flashes with route numbers, Switzerland distinguishes yellow hiking paths from white-red-white mountain paths, and Ireland and the Faroe Islands rely more on cairns and posts. Knowing what you are looking for prevents the common mistake of following an animal track.

Download offline maps and the specific route before leaving connectivity. A GPX track loaded in a dedicated hiking app is far more reliable than a general map application, because it shows elevation profile, expected duration and whether you have drifted off the line.

Set a turnaround time before you start, not during the walk. Decide the hour at which you will return regardless of how close the summit or viewpoint feels. Descending unfamiliar terrain in fading light is where most rescues originate, and daylight in Northern Europe disappears faster in autumn than visitors expect.

Carry the basics even for short walks: water, a wind and rain layer, a headtorch, some food, and a charged phone with emergency numbers saved. In much of Europe, 112 works as the universal emergency number and can locate callers, but it requires a functioning battery.

Finally, respect closures and grazing land. Many scenic paths cross private property or protected habitat, and access frequently depends on the goodwill of local landowners. Following marked routes, closing gates and parking only in designated areas keeps those paths open for the next traveller.
