Europe on €50/Day — A Complete Guide
Traveling Europe on a tight budget might sound impossible, especially in Western Europe, but with the right strategies it's entirely achievable — and you won't have to sacrifice quality experiences.
Accommodation is usually the biggest expense. Hostels remain the budget traveler's best friend, with dorm beds ranging from €10-25 per night. Consider alternatives like Couchsurfing, house-sitting, or working at hostels in exchange for free stays. In Southern and Eastern Europe, budget guesthouses and Airbnb rooms can be surprisingly affordable.
Transport costs can be slashed with a few smart moves. Book trains early for the best fares (especially in France, Germany, and Italy). Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air offer incredibly cheap flights if you travel light. For flexibility, consider a rail pass — but do the math first, as point-to-point tickets are sometimes cheaper.
Eating well on a budget means shopping at local markets and supermarkets for picnic lunches. Many European cities have incredible street food scenes — from €3 döner kebabs in Berlin to €2 pastel de nata in Lisbon. Save restaurant meals for lunch, when set menus (menu del día in Spain, pranzo in Italy) offer the best value.
Free activities abound across Europe. Most major cities offer free walking tours (tip-based), free museum days, and stunning parks and public spaces. Many of Europe's greatest experiences — hiking the Alps, swimming in Croatian coves, exploring medieval old towns — cost nothing at all.
A realistic daily budget breakdown: €15-20 for accommodation, €15 for food, €10 for transport, and €5-10 for activities. Eastern Europe (Poland, Romania, the Balkans) can be done for even less — sometimes €30/day is plenty.
