Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) is a lake in central Switzerland, surrounded by mountains and steeped in the founding mythology of the Swiss Confederation. The lake's irregular shape, with its multiple arms and bays, creates a constantly changing panorama as you travel along its shores. The city of Lucerne, situated at the lake's northwestern end, is one of Switzerland's most charming cities, famous for its medieval Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) — the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, dating from 1333, adorned with 17th-century paintings depicting events from Swiss history. The city's well-preserved old town, with its painted facades and cobbled squares, is a delight to explore. Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi, both accessible by cable car or cogwheel railway, tower above the lake and offer panoramic views that stretch to the distant Alps. Paddle steamer cruises on the lake, some aboard beautifully restored 19th-century vessels, provide a leisurely way to appreciate the scenery and stop at waterside villages.
