Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen in German) are three distinctive battlement-like peaks in the Sexten Dolomites of northeastern Italy. They are one of the best-known mountain groups in the Alps and one of the most visited natural wonders in the region. The classic circular hiking trail around the three peaks is approximately 10 km and takes around 3–4 hours. Along the way, hikers are treated to ever-changing perspectives of the towering limestone walls, alpine pastures, and World War I-era fortifications. The area is also a paradise for rock climbers, with routes on the north faces considered some of the most challenging in the Dolomites. Best visited between June and October, early morning or late afternoon offers the most dramatic lighting for photography.

Visiting Tre Cime di Lavaredo: practical information

    How to get there

Drive the toll road from Misurina up to Rifugio Auronzo (2,320 m), where the loop trail starts. Without a car, bus 444 runs from Cortina and Dobbiaco in July and August. Walk the loop counter-clockwise so the north faces open up gradually at Rifugio Locatelli.

    Best time to go

Mid-June to early October; the road is closed by snow in winter.

    Time needed

3 to 4 hours for the 10 km loop, plus 1 hour of driving each way.

    What it costs

Around €30 per car for the toll road, free on foot. Meals in the rifugi cost €15–25.

Good to know before you go

    • The car park is full by 09:00 in August — arrive before 07:30 or come after 16:00 for evening light.
    • The loop is non-technical but exposed; bring a windproof layer even in July.
    • Rifugio Locatelli sells drinks and simple meals, so you only need 1 litre of water per person.
